Jojo ran to the old observatory where he always went. Of course, he was going to get in trouble for skipping school, but it was all worth it. He was almost there, until he ran into a familiar face. He looked up to see Layla; a 14-year-old Who with neon green eyes and silver hair.
Oh, hey, Jojo! Layla waved down at him.
Hi
uh
what are you doing out of school? Jojo stalled time.
I was excused from school to put these flyers up around town. Layla took one flyer out of her stack and handed it to him. He read it over in silence as Layla looked around, humming a tune.
A talent show? Jojo scoffed.
Hey! Whats so bad about a talent show?! Layla looked offended. If you ask me, all the Whos of Whoville are talented.
Im not offending anyone
Jojo looked at the flyer again. Layla is very eccentric sometimes. She dresses colorfully and she
well
she cant sing.
Im going to sing! Layla took a deep breath to practice.
NO! Jojo snapped. I mean
you dont want to waste your beautiful voice on ME, do you? Wait till the talent show.
But thats in a week! Layla whined. I want to sing before that!
Maybe you can dance. Jojo suggested, shrugging. See ya. He walked past her, feeling more calm about talking to that girl he liked
he can talk to Layla, so why not other girls?
Bye, Jojo! Layla waved at him.
Jojo looked back and smirked at her.
Jojo took deep breaths as he walked. He shouldnt be so nervous. He ran into another friend along the way to the observatory. Ria Whoson; a silent, yet outgoing 15-year-old Who that has purple and black hair and fur. Her lavender eyes sometimes hypnotize Jojo. She loves music and likes to draw, which fascinates Jojo whenever he sees her art.
Jojo, hi. Ria seemed surprised. Why arent you in school?
Why arent YOU in school? Jojo folded his arms.
I was excused to hand these flyers out. Ria handed him a flyer.
A talent show, right? Jojo took the flyer.
Well
no. Ria shrugged.
Jojo looked at the flyer. It had different colors different, and it advertised for something more serious.
Donate money to the childrens hospital on Main Street. Jojo read aloud. He looked up at her. Aw, thats sweet.
It is. I have already donated about $200. Ria smiled down at him.
How charitable. Jojos eyes sparkled. I have to go, see ya. Jojo said, coming out of his daze. He walked past her
Bye. Ria said, walking away.
A talent show and a charity. Whats next, a concert?
Hi, Jojo! A voice yelled from behind Jojo. He looked behind him to find Kali; a very outspoken Who that loves pink and black. Shes 14 and has blue eyes and blonde hair. She loves to read and sing, and has a little crush on him.
Hey Kali. Jojo sighed as he walked towards her.
Here. Kali took a flyer and shoved it in his face.
What-? Jojo read the flyer over. A concert. Why am I not surprised?
I know, its out on Main Street. One of my favorite bands is going to be there
Who Am I? She squealed.
Really. Jojo said in a soft voice, his eyes getting wider.
Uh-huh! She nodded. Well, I have to go hand these out. Ill see you later! Kali waved and skipped back into town.
Jojo turned around and walked to the observatory, singing the whole way.
Jojo paced back and forth in worry. What if someone finds out he skipped school? What if hes going to blow his chances with this girl? What if he stutters if he talks to her? What if he needs to go to the bathroom?
A knock on the observatory door stopped Jojos thinking. He slowly walked over to the door, wondering who it is.
Who- who is it? Jojo finally managed to say, his small fist clinging to his chest, trying to stop his rapidly-beating heart.
Its me! A voice came from outside.
Jojo breathed a sigh of relief. He opened the door to a 15-year-old Who named Kouji. She wants to be Jojos friend but he never really seems to care
or at least it SEEMS like he doesnt care. Shes really optimistic and spunky.
What is it? Jojo sighed, recovering from his fright.
Um
I just wanted to give you this. Kouji handed him a tiny box with a pink bow on it.
What is it? Jojo stared at the box.
Youre suppost to open it. She hinted.
Jojo reluctantly opened the box and looked at her. Inside the box was a mood ring. It was shaped like a heart.
Um, thank you? He said.
Its not from me. Someone put this in my mailbox and a note said I have to give this to you. Suspicious, huh? She smiled.
Yes. Very suspicious. Jojo looked at the ring. Why arent you in school?
I have a cold. She rubbed her nose. But I had to give this ring to you today and I had nothing to do. She shrugged. Well, I have to go. Its medicine time. She stuck out her tongue and shuddered. Its gross.
Like all medicines. Jojo chuckled.
Yeah. Oh, speaking of medicine, are you going to donate any money to that hospital near Main Street? She asked.
Maybe. Jojo shrugged.
You should. The sick kids are so cute! Her eyes sparkled. Well, see you later. She waved and jogged back into town.
Jojo looked at the ring in awe. He took the ring out of the case and put it on his left ring finger. He stared in awe as the ring changed to a brownish color. There was a tiny card at the bottom of the case that told him what the colors meant.
Brown means
confusion. Jojo muttered. He shrugged and went back inside the old observatory. Jojo sure was confused, with this girl problem. He feels like hes being pressured by someone, but hes not. Being a boy can be very
confusing.
